Presentation of Video games' ethics

Let's take Grand Theft Auto (GTA) as and example to discuss with :

Background

GTA, created in United Kindom and produced for PC, Playstation lines, Gameboy lines, Xbox 360 systems. It divided into 4 additions and provided 15 series in total. Modeled American cities as the game’s map. Adult mature and violent themes are focused. There are storylines  for players to complete.Consisting action, adventure, driving, occasional role-playing, stealth and racing elements. Also, GTA containing criminal things like assassinations, taxi driving, firefighting, street racing, bus driving, etc.

Playing it

Farrar et al. (2006) have found that video game play with the blood feature activated can increase aggression. Thus, features of violent games can serve to heighten or dampen effects.
Moral problem may be changed as players get use to act in bad options, doing illegal things are that kind of easy.

For example, Carnagey and Anderson (2005) found that violent video games that reward violent behaviors lead to increases in hostile emotions, aggressive thinking, delinquent behavior and negative personality

Exposure to violent video games is in fact related to increases in aggression. Specifically, violent game play can influence aggressive cognitions and to feelings of hostility

Refer to GTA

The more realistic game led to more physically aggressive intentions.

A more technologically advanced version of a similar video game experienced more presence, more involvement, more arousal and more excitement than those who played the less advanced version. Just like GTA, there are maps from USA cities and those trademarks are designed well. The graphic of GTA are so delighted and in details.

In additional video games like GTA, the perceived realism can influence mental processing of media messages, attitudes and behavior, in some cases intensifying effects

Criminal actions --- incentive to act illegally as in GTA, there are many vriminal options for players to choose, such as murdering, stealing, shooting and burning

Battle 4! Video Art vs GTA

http://www.rockstargames.com/vicecity/
I would like to use GTA, a violent and amorous digital game as an example for my choosen topic--
Are videogames art?
  1. GTA introduction
  2. GTA characteristics
  3. Ethic issues: social, educational, emotional, moral
  4. Animation on GTA: maps, cars, buildings, sounds
  5. Art or not?

Are Computer Games as Art?

In the reading by Renest W. Adams he mentioned that literary art is not the art as itself but the things, or say, the ideas were contained. (Ernest W. Adams P.1-2) For example the recorded tape isn't an art works while the movie or music recored inside is. In the other hand, sculptures are art themselves. To say that it is because those have been sculptured and to appreciate them is to look at the the works themselves.

I do agree this no more because those internet art are transformed from the original forms like painting and sculpture. For example we make paintings and display it onto a place of the second life ( a online game) to
innovated, make things change into new things.

moral problem

I think the internet art works can be defined as art because the using from changed only, just like the music recored by new technologies instead of papers.

Identity is ....

Nowadays people own a lot of online accounts : Facebook, MSN, Mail, ICQ, Blog, Forum, Game...etc. Each categories may even not own only one account but two or more.

So, what is [Identity] ? From Oxford English Dictionary the definition is: the fact or being who or what a person or thing is, the chracteristics determining this. In my view, identity means who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group which make them different from others.( concisCambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary).

I have many identities online, listing them then I found that there were at least five, such as hotmail accounts, LU student account, Facebook account, Xanga accounts...etc.

These online identities are something different to my "in person" identities. In the reality world my gender must be FEMALE but on the internet I can set up my profile as MALE, also I can share my experience to others but actually that maybe just my illusions. My personalities can be "preset", people won't know my real personalities or things just if I let them know.

Digital bodies

There are differences between digital cinema and traditional filmmaking. Traditional filmmaking is aims to let audiences focus on a screen. Also that can't add motion-graphics in films. With the plots, those traditional filmmaaking are to provoke audiences emotions. In the other hand, digital cinema can display more than one image boxes in a screen. Some graphic boxes can be larger or smaller by transforming the messages behind the stories. As a result, the animations can help audiences to understand the meaning easily and deeply. Use Mission to Earth as an example, there are over voice effect through the whole story and there are 2 to 3 boxes in a screen that one is broadcasting the story while others are showing related graphics.  Audiences are not just sit here and watch the stories without any reflections.[1]

This reminded me an art from which called Fabric Art. Fabric art is a kind of art form that combining different patterns or textures of fabric to produce new art performances. Also fabric art is not only focus on fabrics, but also artists can draw on their art works.

Digital cinema

Digital cinema is a new form of boardcasting film while also releasing meaning in a deepen way.
The clips include 2D and 3D animations, image processing, positioning, digital film making and paintings.

I think this kind of new form of film is interesting but sometime as an audience, it is quite difficult for me to understand the meaning immediately while i have to watch the movie, also sometime the images or animations may distract me from the movie, I would easily got lost.

Example:  Mission to Earth

Let's Youtube!

Bruce Lee --Be Water My Friend!

The new technologies help to save the valueable things, and also provide a channel for us to upload our video clips, share to friends and the publics.

It can help the societies to release news and information as fast as it could too. Take Uncle Bus as an example.

there are also other remixed versions created by others according to the original clips too.

Battle 2! Digital vs Analog Photography!

The difference between digital and analog photography are here.
People who used analog camera to take photo cannot know the outcome of the photos immediately until back to dark room and do some chemical steps to output the photos. Finishing effects cannot be done in any ways. So, I think that people who take analog photos need experience and skills more than the digital one. It maybe hard to handle, but original and exciting tastes last long.

For the digital photography, after- effects usually apply on every photos. People can edit or change the colour hue, add new things or have any effects into the photos by software. Not only the effects, and the size of the photos also can be changed.

Digital Knowledge Sharing -- The advent of the wiki

We are group HAPPYSCHOOLDISCUSS :

FREE ACCESSING

On the internet, the concept of "free for sharing" is very important that will burst the development of everything and bring positive competition.

Wikipedia provides free access to all of human knowledge, ultimately providing free knowledge to anyone on anything. No fees or hidden costs- just knowledge. Furthermore it provides a neutral point of view. Since the writers and editors of Wikipedia are everyday people just like you and me, they provide both sides of a story, while a for-profit encyclopedia company may edit or revise articles or sides of a story in order to keep shareholders happy.

As a collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia allows people from a variety of backgrounds to come together to share knowledge and information with the rest of the world. It starts a dialogue about a specific topic and encourages the rest of the world to part-take in this dialogue. As a multilingual encyclopedia, Wikipedia is not an exclusive encyclopedia; one does not need to know English to understand the text. Articles in Spanish, Dutch, French, Portuguese and Chinese are just the beginning of Wikipedia’s multilingual text.

Real-Time Content
Article writers have the ability to change and update articles that in anytime, anywhere, they don’t have to go through the book publishers. So, the Wikipedia can be served as an online newspaper. The article about Manila hostage crisis is created on 23 August, right after it happened.

Battle ! OPEN SOURCE vs PROPRIETARY !

A: Hey! have you ever heard about ______ ?
B: Oh, is it the latest thing? Let me search in Wikipeadia first....

A: Hey! What is _____? I don't have any ideas about this project!
B: Find information on Wikipeadia and you can have an idea of it.

Are these case similar to you? Those happened to me quite often. I used to search Wikipeadia ( Wiki) when I don't have any ideas on a topic, a word, or just a thing.

Wiki is an open source  for marjorities to search information they need while also open to public to edit anything inside this website. So, that mean information are up-to-date and could be changed in a second if you are going to edit any orginal article there. However the information Wiki provided may not be so accurate as "Wikipedia in fact had a third more inaccuracies than Britannica."  (from http://corporate.britannica.com/britannica_nature_response.pdf).
Therefore, it is better to KNOW the basic concept from Wiki rather than to UNDERSTAND from there.

Wiki sounds convenienct and user friendly. I agree on it too. It is a popular resource on the internet nowsaday. How about the proprietary source, like Encyclopeadia? These sources need to be paid so that we can gain the information inside. Those articles, are edited by professionals and have to be proof-read for serval times before publishing. The resources are more respresentable and accurate.

Which do I prefer to use? Both. It is because I can search anything easiler and up-to-date on Wiki, to gain my first hand information. Then to have a further study on the thing I can go for Encyclopeadia to understand deeply.

If there are both pros and cons here, why can't we combine them to make things going better?

Who owns your digital tools, and does it matter?

Charlie Chaplin--- Modern Time

In the film, we know that the new technologies have some benifits in production. The accurrancy of product production like time controling, quality, amount are the benefits of mass production by the new technologies. Also, the production cost can be limited as replacing the empolyee by machines. The production can be in processed for a longer time which may increase the income as more products can be done. All these are the adventages of new technologies.

So, Who gains from these technologies: Workers, customers or bussinessmen? My anwer is both of them. First, the workers can handle the work easier with just simple steps on it. Also some dangerous steps can be done by machines and descrease the industrial accidences happened because of the new technologies. In the customers' sides, they can buy things on a more reasonable price as mass production can help to deduce the production cost, there for products are being cheaper than before which hand made by workers. I think bussinessmen gain most from these technologies, becasue they can check the working process every time by CCTV, just refer to the clip that Charlie wanted to take a break but sooner his boss appeared on the screen told him not to be lazy and backed to work immediately. Also bussinessmen can control the production cost, accurancy and quality better than before. That mean they can earn more.

The new technologies may have benifits, but also disadvantages. Tension of workers has been increased. Using the Modern Times as an example, In the film Charlie got a short break, he cannot stop the jerky, rhythmic movements of his nut-tightening - the trauma of work has left him with a nervous tick. A "Big Brother" screen of his employer in the men's room reprimands him when he sneaks a cigarette: "Hey, quit stalling. Get back to work. Go on." [1] We can see that Charlie is suffering the nervous breakdown after do the same step of his work repeatedly. Finally he has been sent to the hospital and the doctor told him not to be too emotional again. I have a strong feeling of the ending scen which words shown: "Cured of a nervous breakdown but without a job, he leaves the hospital to start life anew.", this is how exploit among workers always happened.

Using computer and internet has became a part of my life. That's a daily thing I have to acheive. Or say, a habit. Sometime I may think that I indulged with the computer too much as I bounding around internet without any purposes. But I can say that I can know the news and new things though the internet easily and quickly although I am staying at home. Computer and internet changed my outgoing lifestyle, while also changing the message spread of the world.
